Everett let out a small laugh, nervously rubbing the back of his head.
"Only if you count chess as a sport."
It was hard to admit, but he lacked Tori's competitive spirit. She had a proactive attitude that he couldn't help but admire. He lacked the stomach for real competition, for that kind of pressure. It was easy to find some degree of inspiration in people who thrived in those situations.
"Say, you know any places around here where I might be able to get a cup of coffee?"

Tori laughed alongside him.
"My friend June would. She loves to play chess. I was never any good at it, but I would play with her anyway just so she'd have someone to play with."
June always crushed her in those chess games. She was the smartest in her little group. And able to make all the fancy gadgets that made Tori feel like James Bond at times. As for his next question Tori looked around the park.
"I think there's a coffee stand somewhere around here. Let's go find it."
Tori began to lead Everett north from where they were standing and continued onward until she found a small stand that sold various different drinks. Among them coffee. Tori pointed at the coffee for a dollar on the sign and smiled over to Everett.
"Right there. Go nuts."

Everett followed after Tori to the coffee stand. He gave her a small 'thanks' before heading over to buy a cup. The man at the stand looked oddly familiar, but Everett couldn't put a name to his face. He handed over two dollars, getting two cups. He mentioned chess, might as well try a gambit. Everett put some cream and two packets of sugar into each coffee. The smell was sublime, and it almost felt a crime to add cream to coffee so dark. Still, he walked back over to Tori and held one of the paper cups out to her, a few napkins between his fingers as well. He had a napkin wrapped around his own cup, the heat of the coffee a bit too much for his hand.

Tori was debating herself what to get before Everett bought two cups of coffee and handed one of them over to her. Tori appreciated the gesture but she personally found coffee to be disgusting. She wanted to say so in a nice way however that didn't offend the man.
"Oh, thank you but I don't drink coffee. Never acquired a taste for it."
Tori gave Everett a sympatric smile as she felt bad turning down the offer, but she couldn't drink what she couldn't stand. Tori was now hesitant to get herself something now thinking that it might just add insult to injury for the guy.

"Ah, sorry. Should've asked first before just buying two."
The thing with gambits is they don't always work. Everett shrugged and gave Tori a small laugh.
"Ah well, guess I got two coffees for today."
He took a sip from one, having acquired the taste for it long ago. He looked over his shoulder, thinking he heard something behind him, but then turned back to her.
"If you don't mind me asking, are there any tastes you've acquired that you might like? I mean, if you'd like something."
Everett stumbled over his words a bit, looking a bit embarrassed over the whole situation. He had made a bit of a misstep before, but now he was worried he might be trying to overcorrect.

Tori let out a very girly giggle when Everett said he now had two coffees to drink. Tori thought Everett was cute, but she wouldn't say it aloud just yet. Her smile spoke volumes however.
"I do have quite the taste for Sprite, or Mountain Dew if they don't have that."
Yes, like a lot of people Tori liked her some soda. She didn't drink it too often as she didn't want to damage her fitness for her swimming competitions, but she knew it was alright to indulge every once in a while.
"If it's not too costly that is."

"Don't worry about the cost, but I dunno if that stand has any."
He looked over at the coffee stand again. It was a small operation, made to be wheeled about and set up quickly. The owner probably moved around the park on the regular, his eyes were sharp and always glancing about, taking in everything. Everett drank a bit more of his coffee, savoring the taste, the texture, though the heat certainly was a bit uncomfortable for him. He headed back over to the stall, exchanging a few quick words with the owner. The owner pulled a bottle of atomic-green liquid from a mini-fridge on the stand, and Everett handed over a few dollars in exchange. He headed back over, holding his two coffees but with the bottle pinched in his elbow. It was a somewhat awkward sight but he had a good hold on it.
"It turns out, they had Mountain Dew."

Tori's face lit up when she saw the Mountain Dew as Tori was always delighted to have some soda. She took it from Everett to help free up his arms so he wouldn't end up spilling something.
"Thanks. This will do. Get it? Do. Dew."
Okay, so it wasn't that funny. Tori carefully opened up the bottle cap not wanting it to explode everywhere and then took a small sip of the soda while looking back at the man.
"So. You live in town?"

Everett laughed, short and soft. It was hard to tell if it was at what Tori said or just how much she committed to it. After she took the bottle, he took a long drink from one of the coffees. Normally he'd want to savor it, make it last, but he also didn't want to be that guy holding two coffees out in public.
"Yeah, got a place in town. Pretty close with my roommate, she's a good friend who's been helping me settle in."

"That's cool. It's always good to have someone to live with so you aren't so lonely. I was thinking after I graduated school and moved out of my parents' house that I could move in with my friend Lily. I'd think you'd like her."
Lily was a good and close personal friend of Tori. Ever since childhood. While she valued all her friendships with those she grew up with, and the most recent friendship with Dani, Lily held a special place in her heart. Her best friend. The girl who was loyal to a tee and was always by Tori's side. Some people would tease them and say they were girlfriends and romantically involved as Lily had somewhat of a reputation hooking up with random girls in and out of school. But Tori didn't see Lily that way, despite being bisexual herself. And as much as Lily liked to tease Tori knew she didn't feel the same about her.
"Settle in? So, you haven't been here long?"
